GEO: The Narrative You Lost

Before they ever call you, the prospect has already asked the AI who you are - and the description they got didn't come from you.

They opened ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity and asked which is the best partner for the problem you solve. The model answered with a name, a description, differentiators, and comparisons - without consulting your website, your deck, or your most recent case studies.

What reached them was a synthesis built from everything that exists about you in public data: articles, mentions, interviews, old content, what others have written about you. The narrative they received wasn't the one you built - it was the probabilistic version of you that the model learned from records you don't always control.

For years, you controlled the narrative because you controlled the channels: website, LinkedIn, case studies, pitch. Now there is an intermediary between you and the buyer, and that intermediary doesn't ask permission to summarize who you are. Your positioning competes directly with the version of you that the model knows.

The companies that have already understood this aren't just doing SEO. They are engineering how AI describes them when the buyer asks the right question. This has a name: GEO, Generative Engine Optimization. Many frame it as just another marketing trend, but in practice it's something else - it's the new layer of brand control that most companies don't yet know they've lost.

The difference between who shows up right and who shows up wrong in this synthesis has less to do with luck than with structure: what you publish, how you position yourself, what narrative you feed into the sources that the models consume.

If you've never asked an AI who your company is, it might be worth doing that now. The answer will tell you exactly what your next prospect already knows - or thinks they know - about you.

How does AI describe your company when someone asks which is the best partner for what you do? Tell me in the comments - and if the answer was different from what you expected, bring it here.
